Improving Skin Through Hydration, Seafood, Maintenance
No one is spared from aging, but we can do more to preserve the collagen and add foods that help preserve the resilience and elasticity of our skin.
When we are in our 30s the oil glands begin decreasing their output, making skin drier. Then, in our forties, the dermis (the thick, inner layer of skin) and the fatty cells beneath the dermis start to thin. Production of collagen and elastin (proteins that give skin tissue its structure and elasticity) decline and wrinkles and sags start to appear. The turn-over rate of keratinocytes (skin cells) also slows down, and the stratum corneum (the dead skin cells that lie atop the epidermis, the outer layer of skin) begin appearing rougher, duller and leather-like. After age 50, this whole process gains momentum and you wake up one morning wondering who that is in the mirror!
But time isn’t the only factor. Although sun has many benefits, it can dry out the skin and slowly destroy the dermis, causing it to lose its resilience and become thin and weak, thus creating sags, creases and wrinkles. For women, when estrogen levels decline, all of the tissues in your body—including your skin—begin losing moisture and thinning out.
More than fifty percent of the people don’t hydrate their skin through bathing. I, personally believe in a 20 minute jet-tub every morning, after a night of drying out.
The best way to keep you skin looking and feeling younger is to keep it well-moisturized.
Four Simple Ways to Improve Your Skin:
Hydrate your skin by sipping water and refreshing your body with a full body bath in mineral water. Avoid foods that have a dehydrating effect on your skin—junk foods with refined sugar, foods high in trans fatty acids and high-sodium potato chips, pretzels and crackers.
Also cut down on caffeinated beverages and alcohol and above all stop smoking. You can always tell a smoker by the loss of collagen in their face and the dried out apple face. Don’t even think of frequenting restaurants, casinos or other businesses that have people blowing smoke in your face. After shaving, try using one of the top moisturizing creams rather than alcohol-based after-shave lotion. I use Nivea Moisture Lotion with provitamin B5. The provitamin B5 works in harmony with your skin. You can add a little of your favorite after shave lotion to keep you identity aroma. Apply it to your skin while it is still damp after a shower or bath.
Stock up on food high in water and mineral content, such as fresh watermelon, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and legumes, soups and salads. And replace your caffeinated beverages with tea, fresh lemon and water or lime.
Exercise regularly—it increases circulation, helps to balance hormones and keep them at healthy levels, and helps the detoxification process through sweating. Remember to sip water at regular intervals while you are playing tennis or golf, even if you are not visibly sweating. Wind and cooler temperatures may cause the sweating to dry out the skin without the appearance of moisture on your skin. Exercise helps to purify and tone your skin. Vitamin D from the sun and walking further increase your healthy glow.
Consider eating Omega-3 rich foods like wild red Pacific Salmon, Herring, Sardines and nuts like walnuts, almonds, and peanuts, taking into consideration your food allergies.
Exfoliate your skin with a long-handled brush to stimulate the skin and help remove the dead skin - while bathing or showering.
One of the moisturizers brought to my attention incorporates the use of Marine Neutraceuticals like squalane found in sharks. These sharks produce squalane to supply themselves with much-needed oxygen when they’re swimming in waters up to 1,000 meters deep. But what researchers found is that squalane can do the same for your skin. The claims include: reduce and soften the appearance of wrinkles, boost your skin’s ability to naturally regenerate. Nourish, hydrate and protect the skin, moisturize dry, chapped skin and make your skin look more radiant and supple. Using a moisturizer after shaving will soothe the irritated areas on your face and neck and leave your skin smooth, moist ane soft. Water will appear to roll right off your face because of the oils which are retained.
