Integrative Medicine is Here to Stay

There is exciting evidence that the gap between "establishment" (allopathic) and "alternative" integrative medicine (which includes acupuncture and homeopathy) is closing. Many conservative minds have begun to recognize the value of "new approaches," and the public is behind the change, showing its support in the soaring popularity of natural supplements and alternative therapies.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, world-famous cardiologist and medical director of New York Presbyterian Hospital, declares, "If physicians are approached with good data, most are open to new medical options." Dr. Oz integrates hypnosis, guided imagery, and therapeutic touch with his own cardiac surgery.
At Memorial Sloan-Kettering, where the integrative medicine service opened just this year, Dr. Barrie Cassileth predicts, "In 10-years, integrative medicine will become the standard." She adds that the stature of the tom medical professionals such as Dr. Kondrot Oz will make all the difference in convincing other physicians to open their minds. (Medical Tribune, October 7, 1999)
Integrative medicine is on its way to becoming firmly established. The momentum is powerful, and the final goal is in sight. For that, we all should be deeply grateful.
(ARMD) Age Related Macular Degeneration is a major concern to an aging population.
Proper nutrition can help protect against ARMD. Because many people do not eat enough fruits and vegetables. For years, I have recommended the addition of Wild Blueberries, Pomegranate, & Apples to Whole Grain Oatmeal. Cinnamon, raisins and a bit of honey with a scant amount of natural honey provides you with the best of all health benefits to your breakfast regimen. Some Flaxseed margarine skim milk and raisins make the morning meal a health benefit to keep you regular, provide lecithin (Drano of the arteries) and Lutein for the eyes. A cup of coffee can help start the lungs and other functions to get moving. I also like fresh pineapple and a large orange to provide the vitamin C and the bromelain and papain of the pineapple for the arthritis pain and inflammation. Use a Large Flake oatmeal instead of the quick oats to assure that you can skim off any contaminates that accompany most stored grains. Pine Bark and grape seed extract along with the cartenoids and vitamins A, C, and E should also be considered in the fortification of your immune system.
My eye doctor believes that the foods I eat were responsible for the turn around in my vision to 20/20 and the cataract condition not requiring surgery at the age of 73-years-old. He also believes that Mother Nature is best.
Another development is providing the elderly with hope regarding their eyesight. A new microcurrent technology can slow down the vision impairment caused by ARMD. The Opthamologist who developed it is Edward C. Kondrot, M.D. He has even written a book about it: "Microcurrent Stimulation: Miracle Eye Cure." Investigating these alternatives may be helpful to you.

Many of the homeopathic remedies were used by my grandparents. They lived poor in money but rich in the knowledge of good fruits and vegetables. The drank goat milk and raised their own chickens. The fruits were bottled with a rubber seal and a metal cap that provided fruit for the whole winter. Life was good for them and their ten children (9 girls and 1 son). They used beagles to hunt deer and rabbit and hung the deer below the home (packed with salt). The venison aged and gramps would slice the green off the aged meat before removing the part he needed for grandma's cooking. They possessed the best of all necessities in the love they gave and received from their large family. As the children of their daughters came along, they too, learned to hunt, cook and prepare for the winter food supply.
All four of my grandparents born in 1880 lived to the ripe old age of 88-years-old. My mother's parents were born in Sicily and they were less than 5 feet in height. My mother was 5'8" and I am 6'2." My son is 6'4" and his son looks to exceed that height. I also learned to appreciate the greens they picked in the wild for their salads. They could identify all the good God-given foods that made them strong in mind, body and spirit. Their faith was unwavering and was their source of strength in hard times. And so it may be that we are finally accepting of the "manna from heaven" and the benefits of the food they ate. Gramps made his own wine and grandma prepared fresh baked bread to fill the air with the aroma of love and the warmth of heart I experienced as a young man.
The Buffalo Homeopathic Hospital was originated in a house in Buffalo, NY 1872. The hospital is the workplace of my wife Julie. The property at Gates Circle was built in 1911 and the name was changed to Millard Fillmore Hospital in 1923. So you see we may be just going "back to the future" when we begin to accept Nature's Remedies in healing and curing those who are ill.
I often refer to my grandmother as the doctor in the family. She led her many children to believe in God and his many gifts. Humans have tried for more than 150 years to replicate the benefits of these foods, fruits and vegetables and have failed to advance the art of medicine. Now they have seen the research and the proof of the benefits of these Mediterranean immigrants who brought so much to America. Their offspring believed in education and became doctors, teachers, administrators and pharmacists. To live the rugged life of coal miners in a home with no central heat or even a bathroom is a credit to their strength and wisdom.
